OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley University officially opened the new Wolverine Training Dome on Tuesday, cutting the ribbon at the new indoor facility on UVU's Vineyard campus.
The dome, which can be seen from Interstate 15, will be home to UVU Athletics for indoor training, allowing many of the teams to practice throughout the year, regardless of weather. It will also house a strength and conditioning gym for Wolverine athletics.
"This is a wonderful facility for our entire student population. The benefits are immense and allow all of our athletic programs to increase their training during cold-weather months, while also permitting us to expand what we offer through intramurals," said Val Peterson, UVU Vice President of Finance and Administration.
In addition to an additional facility for intramurals, UVU club sports -- such as lacrosse and rugby -- will also benefit from the dome as well.
"What you see happening here today is a powerful reminder of what can happen when people work collaboratively within an organization," UVU President Matthew S. Holland said. "It's something that doesn't often happen where different divisions who have their own dedicated budgets and missions realize they are more powerful together than they are separate. I really want to commend student affairs and athletics for coming together."
"We have such a strong partnership with athletics and not only do we get to highlight our amazing athletic teams, but we also get to highlight our sports clubs and intramurals," said UVU Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, Alexis Palmer.
The walls of the dome are just over 2 feet wide by nearly 7 feet deep around the entire perimeter which is unlike typical design on a standard construction building.
The dome covers one of UVU's Geneva Fields with an overall area of 100,163 square feet and is 72 feet tall. Construction took approximately seven months to complete.
