BROOKINGS, South Dakota - Deise Borghetti typified a Utah Valley State team that rebounded from a disappointing loss the night before to defeat South Dakota State 30-26, 30-32, 30-28, 30-22 in NCAA volleyball action Thursday night.
Borghetti, who had a negative hitting percentage in the previous-night loss to Augustana, had 13 kills and hit an impressive .346 in the win over SDSU.
"I'm very happy with the win tonight and how well the girls played," said an upbeat UVSC coach Sam Atoa. "It was nice to see some of the girls come through tonight."
Atoa added that the girls were swinging at the ball all night. He said their aggressive swinging made some of the sets closer than they really were because they had some hitting errors. But he didn't care because they weren't swinging tentatively like the night prior.
The third set was a good example. UVSC led 29-23 but some hitting errors by UVSC led to the closer-than-it-looks final of 30-28.
Borghetti wasn't alone on the night. Kassidy Brotherson also responded after a sub-200 hitting performance with a very solid .500. She also had a match-high 19 kills. Jenny Weed added 12 kills to give the Wolverines three players with double-digit kills.
UVSC improved to 5-9 on the season.
