OREM, UTAH - Deise Borghetti and
Kassidy Brotherson led a Utah Valley State attack that hit .368 in a straight-set win, 30-17, 32-30, 30-26, over visiting University Montana-Western Tuesday night.
Borghetti, who has been rehabilitating following shoulder surgery, appeared healed with a match-high 17 kills. She had just two errors on 28 attacks while hitting .536. She was very consistent throughout with five kills in game one, and six in both games two and three.
Brotherson had a match-high hitting percentage of .542 with 15 kills to give the Wolverines a nice 1-2 punch. Utah Valley fell behind in the first game 0-1 but outscored the Bulldogs 16-4 to breeze to the 30-17 win. Game two didn't come so easy for UVSC.
The Bulldogs led 11-6 following a kill by Kendall Bradley. But UVSC outscored Montana-Western 7-1 to take a 13-12 lead. The final three points of the run were all the result of Borghetti kills.
Montana-Western answered with a mini 3-1 run to regain the lead at 15-14. The match remained tied or had the Bulldogs leading by a point until Utah Valley State finally claimed the lead at 23-22.
Bulldog Emily Smith tied things with a kill. Then UVSC had two hitting errors and a ball-handling error to give Montana-Western a 27-24 lead. A kill by Wolverine
Jenny Weed and a Bulldog attack error put UVSC down just one at 27-26. But Montana-Western followed with consecutive points and it was game-point at 29-26 for the Bulldogs.
Brotherson, Krystal Peterson, and
Lacee Koelliker all answered with kills to stave off three game-points and the set was tied 29-29. UVSC won three of the next four points to win the game in dramatic fashion. The final point came fittingly on a Borghetti kill.
Game three was tied 23-23 before UVSC pulled away for the final 30-26 score to seal the match.
Weed added 10 kills for the Wolverines, Peterson had 8, McFarland 7, Koelliker 4, and Lunt 1. Montana-Western was led by Kasey Smith, Katherine Sunwall, and Emily Smith who all had 10 kills appiece for the Bulldogs.
Wolverine's Rogers and Koelliker teamed for 49 assists with Rogers getting 26 and Koelliker 23. Lindsay Scott led Montana-Western with 20 assists. UVSC improved to 4-8 on the season.
