GREELEY, Colo. - Utah Valley State's (6-11) solid defensive effort was not enough to hold off a hot University of Northern Colorado team Friday night. The Wolverines stretched the match to four sets, but were bested in the end 30-25, 30-21, 28-30, 30-19 at Butler-Hancock Hall.
The Bears (28-2) extended their match winning streak to 22, and won their 21st consecutive home match. The Wolverines snapped the Bears 22-game winning streak at home, dating back to UNC's season opener against North Dakota State.
The Wolverines out blocked the Bears 12-8.
Kassidy Brotherson had 8 block assists to go along with her team high 14 kills and
Lacee Koelliker contributed 7 block assists.
Deja Lunt led UVSC with 20 digs, while Krystal Peterson added 10.
In game three, the UVSC defense stepped up and held UNC to only a .103 hitting percentage, including 11 errors as the Wolverines won the set 30-28.
"I thought we played exceptionally well tonight with the best defensive effort of the season," said Head Coach
Sam Atoa. "In the end we just ran out of gas."
UNC put up some gotty numbers of their own defensively as Kristi Krom had a career high, 29 digs. Terin Ledall had 16 digs and Linnea Kiilsgaard and Amanda Wiggins chipped in 14 a piece.
Offensively the Bears were just as impressive with four players recording double digit kills. Wiggins and Danelle Angus led the charge with 19 and 18 kills, respectively. Ledall had 14 kills and her sister Maggie Ledall had 10.
The Wolverines couldn't get anything going offensively only hitting .110 for the match.
UVSC travels to Colorado Springs to take on Colorado College Saturday. The Wolverines will battle UNC one more time in the Division I Independent Championships in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
