CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -Â The Utah Valley State volleyball team got back to winning ways with a three game sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night.
The Wolverines took control early, beating the Islanders 30-21, 30-26, 32-30 at Moody Fieldhouse.
Leading the charge offensively for UVSC was Deise Borghetti and Krystal Taylor, who both ended up with match-high 18 kills. Taylor was efficient attacking the ball, making only one error in 29 attacks and finishing with a .586 hitting clip.
Lacee Koelliker continued to be steady setting the ball, finishing the night with her team-high eighth double-double. She tallied 39 assists and 15 digs on the night.
Jessica Endres and Malia Hoyt added seven kills a piece in the match.
In the first game, Utah Valley State took a commanding 13-2 lead and set the tone of the match. The Islanders did battle back to within four points, but couldn't complete the comeback. Utah Valley State took advantage of nine Islander hitting errors in the opening frame to take the early lead.
TAMUCC led by as many as four points midway through the second game, but couldn't overcome Borghetti-Taylor and company. Although the Islanders out-hit UVSC .308 to .271, the Wolverines came away with the victory.
The third game went much like the second with the score going back and forth with the Islanders taking a 28-24 lead. But UVSC wouldn't let the last game slip away. The Wolverines tied the game at 29 thanks to a Borghetti kill. The Islanders would then take a 30-29 lead, but UVSC went on to score the next three points to secure the game and the match.
The Wolverines improve to 7-8 on the year, and TAMUCC falls to 14-10.
UVSC will travel to Edinburg, Texas to take on Texas-Pan American on Saturday. UTPA swept TAMUCC in three games earlier this week. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (MST).
