Wolverines Sweep Boise State

OREM, Utah - It wasn't perfect but it was sure close. On Thursday, the Utah Valley State Volleyball team swept Boise State 30-13, 30-23, 32-30 in its final regular season home match.

Seniors Alina Wallauer and Deise Borghetti led the Wolverine offensive fireworks with 11 kills apiece. Wallauer also added 11 digs. Utah Valley turned in a solid defensive outing by holding Boise State to a .117 hitting percentage. In the first two games Boise hit .023 and .071. ??The impressive defensive performance resulted in a nice all-around offensive performance.

In game one, Utah Valley recorded an impressive .452 hitting percentage and had no errors.

"When you hit .452 and make no errors, I don't know if you can do much better," Utah Valley State coach Sam Atoa said. "Tonight the girls hit very well."

The Wolverines jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in game 1 and later extended it to 23-8 on a Boise State hitting error. Wallauer closed out game 1 by connecting on three consecutive kills. Utah Valley maintained command of the match by jumping out to a 12-7 lead in game 2. Boise State rallied to tie the game at 13-13, but the Wolverines quickly regained the lead at 16-13.

Utah Valley State held a slim 20-19 lead but then scored five straight points to lead 25-19. ??A Boise State service error gave Utah Valley the win.
The only time the Wolverines trailed in the match came in game 3. Boise State jumped out to a 1-0, 2-1, 5-4, 6-4 and 6-5 lead. A Lacee Koelliker block tied the game at 6-6 for the Wolverines and a Jessica Endres kill gave the Wolverines the lead for good at 7-6.

Boise State tied the game several times in the final game but never took the lead.

"I was really proud of our girls," Atoa said. "We took it to a good team and really disputed Boise State."

The Wolverines play at Northern Colorado on Saturday. They host the Independent Championships at the McKay Center Nov. 11-13.
