OREM, Utah - Two programs in their division I infancy took the court Tuesday night as Utah Valley State hosted Utah State. In the first regular season match-up in history between the two squads, the Utah State Aggies came out on top 75-59.
Katie Wilson and Kelci Naihe both had double-doubles for the Wolverines. Wilson finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Naihe had 12 points and 11 boards.
The Utah State defense caused 21 turnovers, but that wasn't what bothered Utah Valley coach Cathy Nixon.
"We need to be able to defend and rebound the ball to keep ourselves in the game," said Nixon. "We're not a team that is going to score 80 points in a game...and some of the things we need to do to be successful, we didn't do."
The game was tight early on, with five lead changes in the first half. But after a Jessica Scabby jumper put the Wolverines up 23-21, the Aggies went on an 12-2 run to take an eight point and carried that into a 41-34 half time lead.
The Aggies continued their run through the first seven and a half minutes of the 2nd half, building a 51-35 lead. Utah Valley came out of the locker room cold and couldn't muster a field goal until Naihe's bucket at the 12:17 mark in the 2nd.
A 6-0 run by the Wolverines cut the lead to 10, but Utah State scored the next 10 points to take a 20 point lead. A Utah Valley run cut it to 13 but the Wolverines could get no closer.
After shooting 50% from the field in 1st half, coach Nixon's squad only hit 22% in the from the field in the 2nd and 34% for the game.
Up next Utah Valley State will leave tomorrow morning for Fairbanks, Alaska for the North Star Invitational this weekend. They will spend Thanksgiving away from home together as a team.
"We're going to do some fun things, we have reservations at a restaurant...so we'll spend time together and remember what we're grateful for," said coach Nixon.
They will take on Alaska Fairbanks on Friday then either Western Carolina of Jacksonville State on Saturday.
