Wolverines Get Energy Back in Sweep of Memphis

PROVO, Utah - Head Coach Sam Atoa thought his team needed more energy in Saturday morning's game against Oklahoma. The Wolverines fought hard but came up short in four games. Atoa must have given his team a great pep talk before the Memphis match because the Wolverines came out on fire, sweeping the Tigers, 30-26, 30-26, 30-18.

When asked what he told them before the Memphis match, Atoa said: "I told them they needed to have fun and keep it simple."

Middle blocker Jessica Endres had a lot of "fun" as she did the most damage offensively. She finished with a match-high 17 kills and hit at a gouty .536 clip. Her kill tally was also a season high mark for the freshman from Gilbert, Arizona.

"Jessica [Endres] is developing into a really good middle for us," said Atoa. "She's going to be a very good asset to this program for the next four years."

Deise Borghetti stayed strong with 10 kills, and Alina Wallauer had the next highest kill total with eight. Lacee Koelliker "kept it simple" by finishing with 35 assists and 13 digs. Back row specialist, Chelsea O'Neal, also a freshman, had another solid match with 11 digs, making it three consecutive matches with double-figure digs.

"I saw a totally different team against Memphis, than I saw against Oklahoma this morning," said Atoa. "We need to come out every day and play like we did in our second match today."

For Memphis, Tiara Gilkey led the way with 15 kills, and 13 digs. Gilkey was the only Tiger to finish in double-figure kills. Setter Heather Watts finished with a match-high 37 assists.

The Wolverines will travel to Portland, Oregon September 16-18 to play in the Nike Portland Pilot Invitational. UVSC will play UC-Davis, Cal Poly-SLO, Portland State, and host team, University of Portland.
