PORTLAND, Oregon -Â Despite having three players with 19 or more kills, Utah Valley State lost in five games to Cal Poly-SLO, 28-30, 30-25, 20-30, 30-23, 11-15, on Friday at the Chiles Center.
Deise Borghetti finished with a match-high 22 kills, and Alina Wallauer notched 20 kills, while Krystal Taylor tallied a season-high 19 kills for the Wolverines. Setter Lacee Koelliker was busy deciding between the three front liners, who made up 88 percent of the UVSC offense. Koelliker finished with a season-high 59 assists.
UVSC and Cal-Poly traded off wins through the first four games, with the Wolverines winning the second and fourth games. There were five lead changes, and six tie scores in the first game, and five lead changes and 10 tie scores in game two. The Mustangs took games one and three, before winning game four 15-11, to close out the match.
With the loss, the Wolverines drop to 4-3, and snap their mini two-game winning streak. The Mustangs get their second win of the season, improving to 2-6.
On the defensive side, UVSC out-dug Cal Poly 91-78, but the Mustangs blocking core ended up being effective as they recorded 19 team blocks to UVSC's six. The Wolverines had 69 kills to the Mustangs 59, but UVSC had 15 more attack errors.
Leading the way for the Mustangs was Kayla Mulder who recorded 21 kills. Teammates Emily Doris and Nicole Bertotti added 16 and 10 kills, respectively.
UVSC is scheduled to play in a double-header on Saturday to finish its games in the Nike Portland Pilot Invitational. The Wolverines will match up against Portland State at 11:00 am (MST), and will take on host team, University of Portland in the nightcap game at 8:30 pm (MST).
