PORTLAND, Oregon -Â The Utah Valley State volleyball team lost in three games to University of Portland in the championship game of the Nike Portland Pilot Invitational. Deise Borghetti and Alina Wallauer were named to the All-Tournament team.
UVSC finished 2-2 in the tournament, losing 30-24, 30-21, 30-15, to the host Pilots who went a perfect 4-0 to take the title.
"I thought we had a great tournament, finishing second," said head coach Sam Atoa. "I am proud of the girls coming out here and competing as well as they did against four good teams."
The UP defensive attack handled the Wolverine offense, holding UVSC to a .057hitting percentage for the match. The Pilots finished the night hitting at a.374 clip. The Pilots also out-blocked the Wolverines nine to two.
UVSC didn't have any players in double-figure kills for the first time this season.Borghetti finished one shy with nine, and setter Lacee Koelliker had eight kills to go along with her 28 assists. Borghetti did have a team-high 11 digs, and Wallauer tallied nine.
UP's Sara Vercruyssen came off the bench to lead all players with 17 kills and a .438 hitting percentage.
Borghetti earns All-Tournament honors for the second straight week, having been the only UVSC player to be named to the All-Tourney team in the BYU/Mizuno Classic last week. She had two matches with 20-plus kills (26 against UC-Davis, and 22 against Cal Poly-SLO) and in four matches averaged a double-double with 17 kills and10.25 digs per match.
Wallauer was just as impressive, notching a 20 kill, 23 dig match against Cal Poly. For the tournament Wallauer also averaged a double-double with 14.25 kills and 15.75 digs per match.
UP senior Michelle Oakland was named tournament MVP. Rounding out the All-Tournamentteam with Borghetti and Wallauer were: Sheena Surplus - Portland, Jessica Brodie - Portland State, Kayla Mulder - Cal Poly and Mary McClelland - UC Davis.
The Wolverines claimed second-place, Portland State finished in third place,Cal Poly was fourth and UC Davis finished in fifth-place.
UVSC will continue to be on the road next week to play Idaho State in Pocatello on Tuesday at 7:00 pm (MST), and UNLV on Saturday at 2:00 pm (MST).
