Wolverines Fall at Northern Colorado

Box Score : Cumulative Stats

Greeley, Colorado - After a sixteen day layoff the Utah Valley State women’s basketball team had the tough task of shaking off the rust as they got back on the court Saturday night against Northern Colorado. And while the Wolverines made a game of it, in the end the Bears outlasted Utah Valley 75-57 in a game much closer than the final score indicated.

The Wolverines were within four with just 3:30 to go after Courtney Lynn hit a big three-pointer to cut the lead to four, but Kayla Flavin struck back with a quick three of her own and Utah Valley could get no closer than six the rest of the way.

The Wolverines stayed within striking distance until they were forced to foul at the end, putting the game out of reach.

Miriam Palkki led Utah Valley with 18 points, shooting 7-8 from the field, while Kaydee Allred scored 11. Courtney Lynn had a seven points, six rebounds and six assists in 39 minutes for Cathy Nixon’s club.

The Bears shot 31-38 from the free throw line, while the Wolverines were only 7-14 from the stripe. Flavin led the Bears with 18 points, while Bailey Dillon scored 13, 11 of which came from the free-throw line.

Palkki scored the first eight points of the game for the Wolverines, hitting all three of her shots in the first half, until she ran into foul trouble.

The game was tight when Flavin hit a three pointer and was fouled; turning a four point Bear lead into an eight point advantage at 22-14. The four-point play started an 11-2 run for Northern Colorado that put them up 29-16. But the Wolverines finished the half strong going on an 11-2 run of its own to make it a 31-27 game at the break. Jasmin Fantl came off the bench to hit two three-pointers to spark the run.

With the loss, Utah Valley falls to 2-16 on the year, while Northern Colorado improves to 5-13. The two teams will meet again in Orem on February 26th at 5:00pm.

Up next the Wolverines will take on Oregon State Tuesday night at 8:00pm MST in Corvallis, Oregon.
