Utah Valley Topples Montana State

Box Score : Cumulative Stats

OREM, Utah - Much like Aspirin cures a headache, a win on the basketball court can cure the frustration of losing. And Thursday night in Orem, the Utah Valley State women's basketball team used just the right medicine to beat Montana State 37-28.

"We've been aching for a win. It feels great," said head coach Cathy Nixon after her team snapped an eight game losing streak.

Katie Wilson had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Kaydee Allred also had 11 rebounds for the Wolverines.

Utah Valley State out-rebounded the Bobcats by 20, 48-28, and made a conscious effort to slow the game down offensively.

"We've been trying to make is control the game a little bit more and control the ball," said Nixon. ?"And to see and take that turn tonight where we implement it and do the things we've been asking them to do...that feels great to me."

The Wolverines held Montana State to just 20% shooting from the field, including just 2-22 from the three-point line. They also held the Bobcat's leading scorer, Kati Burrows, to just six points, almost nine points below her season average.

"All the performances were good and I saw kids kinda click out of some of the slumps they've been in confidence wise," said Nixon. "I just like it for them...to have some payback for what they do in practice and for their effort out on the court."

The win improves the Wolverines to 2-12 on the season.

Up next is an in-state game at Weber State on Saturday night. Game time is 7:30pm MST, which is a change from the original 5:00pm tip-off because of a change in the Weber State men's schedule. Following the game Saturday, the Wolverines will host Eastern Washington Monday night at 7:05 in The McKay Center. All students and faculty get in free with UVSC ID.
