Big First Half Propels Air Force Past Wolverines

OREM, Utah - The Air Force Falcons used a 29-4 first half run to build a 26 point lead at the half and never looked back, winning 97-70 Wednesday night over Utah Valley State in women's basketball. The Falcons hit 8-12 from the three-point line and 18-30 overall in the first half to build a 53-27 lead at the break.

The Wolverines used a 16-5 run to open the 2nd half, getting them within 13, but Air Force fought off the rally to improve to 2-0 on the season while Utah Valley drops to 0-2.

"They just shot the lights out," said Utah Valley head coach Cathy Nixon. "I think when teams are on fire like that you have to be working just to try to keep it close. We're just not real good at the process defensively right now and we've got to get better there."

Robyn Fairbanks continued her early season success by scoring 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds while Sandy Marvin added 17 for the Wolverines. Sophomore Susie Cornejo made a big contribution off of the bench, scoring a career high 12 points.

"I'm excited to see her progress," said Nixon of Fairbanks. "She's playing against some pretty good kids and finding ways to be successful. On the offensive end she's really in a great place."

Pamela Findlay led four Falcons in double figures with 17, doing most of her damage from three-point land going 5-8 for the game.

Air Force also won the battle of the boards, out rebounding the Wolverines 42-30. Turnovers plagued both teams as the Falcons committed 24 to UV's 23.

Utah Valley State will be back in action Saturday night against Fresno State at 7:05pm in the McKay Center. The Bulldogs were a WNIT team last year and lead the all-time series 1-0 after a 57-36 victory over the Wolverines last season in Fresno.
