Wolverines Win on Senior Night

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley State had an emotional night from start to finish, as seniors Maegan Hoyt and Anne Olsen were honored before the match, and the Wolverines pulled off a four game win over South Dakota State, 31-29, 30-23, 25-30, 30-28 Friday on "Senior Night."

"We showed a lot of will throughout the match," said head coach Sam Atoa. "I'm really proud of them."

Olsen and Hoyt played their last match with heart, and didn't disappoint. Hoyt finished with 24 digs, while Olsen blasted 15 kills. Freshman Camie Manwill complimented the seniors with a match-high 18 kills and 15 digs to notch her sixth double double of the year.

"It couldn't have been any better for the seniors," said Atoa. "It was a tall order to beat a good team, and it was very sweet for our seniors. It was fun to see the other girls rally around them."

In game one, the Jackrabbits took an early 7-2 lead before Utah Valley State needed to call a timeout. The Wolverines would force the Jacks to call a timeout of their own, as UV made an 8-6 run to get within three points at 13-10. UV would continue to fight back and eventually tie the game at 26-26. The Wolverines ended up making a late 5-3 run to take the game 31-29.

Game two was back-and-forth throughout with each team exchanging leads. The Wolverines finally took a two point edge at 25-23 to force a SDSU timeout. The break would prove to be more advantageous for the Wolverines as they scored the last five points of the game to take the set 30-23.

The Jacks took the early advantage in game three taking an 11-4 lead, before UV would call timeout. SDSU would extend its lead to ten points at 16-6, but the Wolverines wouldn't go away. UV went on a 13-6 run to cut the lead to three at 22-19, and made a late push but couldn't hold on. The Jacks would finish off the game 30-25 to stay in the match.

In game four the Jacks continued to own the momentum in the early part, taking a 16-10 lead. The Wolverines weren't fazed and continued to push for points competing back to within one at 24-23, and eventually overtaking the lead at 28-27 when SDSU called timeout. The Wolverines would come out of the break and take the momentum and the match scoring two out of the next three points.

The Wolverines (13-11) end the regular season on a high note, and take momentum into the Division I Independent Tournament next week in Greeley, Colorado. The tournament will be November 10-12.
