San Diego, CA - It was one of those forgettable nights for the Utah Valley State women’s basketball team Thursday as they lost at San Diego State 91-45.
The 1st half tells the story as the Aztecs, who average 26% from beyond the arc, hit 11-14 three-pointers (78%) in the first half alone, setting a new season high for three-pointers made in a game in just over 16 minutes.
The Wolverines were as cold as San Diego State was hot, as Utah Valley hit only 5-18 from the field in the first half.
For the game, the Aztecs’ pressure defense caused 28 turnovers, leading to 45 points for the home team.
Katie Wilson led the Wolverines with 11 points while Rebekah Fales followed up her 19 point effort at Jacksonville State with 10 points and a game high seven rebounds.
Michelle Strawberry scored 16 to lead San Diego State, while Orem native Ashley Cheesman finished with seven for San Diego State.
The Aztecs finished 32-56 (57%) from the floor and 17-24 (70%) from the three-point line while Utah Valley State hit just 17-52 (33%) from the
floor.
The Wolverines will now have 13 days before their next game at Fresno State on February 23rd. Their final home game will be on February 26th against Northern Colorado at 5:00pm. The men’s team will also play Northern Colorado at the conclusion of the women’s game.
That will be the final regular season home game for seniors Courtney Lynn and Katie Wilson and the final game at the McKay Center for All-American
candidate Ronnie Price.
The following weekend, the women’s team will host the Division I Independent Tournament at the McKay Center March 3-5.
