LOGAN, Utah - Utah Valley State dropped a doubleheader at Utah State on Saturday, losing 9-1 in six innings and 11-9.
Utah Valley State had 20 hits in the two games, with 14 coming in the second game.
Rachel Hartgrove led the Wolverine offensive attack by going five for seven with one RBI. Amanda Kendzior and Katie Welling each had three hits in the two games.
In game two, Welling hit a two-run homerun in the second inning to give Utah Valley a 2-1 lead. Utah State tied the game at 2-2 in the third before the Wolverines countered with a run in the fourth to retake the lead at 3-2 following an RBI by Sara Roskelley. In the inning Utah Valley loaded the bases with no outs but only managed the one run.
The Aggies scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead. The lead didn-??t last long as Kendzior smacked a two-out three-run homerun to tie the game at 6-6. Hartgrove and Jackie Roberts reached base on a single and a double to set up the homerun.
Hartgrove and Kelli Wilkins later scored runs in the sixth inning to give Utah Valley an 8-6 lead. Utah State grabbed the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning when they scored five runs to lead 11-8.
Utah Valley threatened to tie the game in the seventh when they scored one run and had the tying run at the plate with two outs. Aggie pitcher Heather Straight then forced Wilkins to ground out to end the game.
In game one, Utah Valley State trailed only 2-1 after the top of the fifth inning. But Utah State scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the sixth to earn the win.
Utah Valley State hosts No. 22 Washington at 2 p.m. on Thursday in a doubleheader.
