OREM, Utah – Utah Valley State welcomed Utah to Orem for the first time, but the Utes weren't the best guests, taking the volleyball match in four games, 24-30, 19-30, 30-25, in front of 401 fans at the Activity Center Tuesday night.
Jessica Endres, Anne Olsen, and Camie Manwill all finished in double figure kills, but it wasn't enough to overtake the 2004 Mountain West Conference Defending Champion Utes.
Endres recorded 12 kills, and Olsen and Manwill ended the night with 11 apiece. Lacee Koelliker got a slow start, but came on in the end and finished with 40 assists.
"We had to compete hard to win this match," said Utah head coach Beth Launiere. "I thought they [Utah Valley State] were very competitive, and fought hard. That is what I expect from a Sam Atoa team. He is a good coach, and always has his team prepared."
Utah out-hit UV .205 to .065 and out-blocked the Wolverines 15.5 to 9. The Wolverines had 50 kills to Utah's 56, but it was the 40 Wolverine hitting errors (to Utah's 25) that hurt the home team.
The nine Wolverine team blocks matched a season-high, and was a bright spot during the match according to head coach Sam Atoa.
"We set four goals for the match and we met one of them, and that was our blocking," said Atoa. "It was encouraging to see that we are starting to get into the right place and see the right things."
The Utah match marked the third straight match that the Wolverines have recorded nine team blocks, and they have won two out of their last three.
The Wolverines used four kills each from Endres and fellow middle blocker Brooke Adams to take game three, 30-25, off 14 Koelliker assists. But just when UV started to get some momentum, Utah knocked the Wolverines back with a 4-0 run to start the fourth set, and later went on a 9-0 spurt to run away in the final game.
Utah finished the night with two players in double digit kills. Two time All-Mountain West Conference outside, and Orem native, Shelly Sommerfeldt had a match-high 13, and Airial Salvo finished with 10.
UV falls to 4-6 on the young season while the Utes improve to 8-3. The Wolverines are off the rest of the week and will prepare to host in-state rival Weber State on Tuesday, September 27th.
