OREM, Utah –The Utah Valley State volleyball team looked like it was going to make quick work of Montana State after taking game one 30-22, but the Bobcats didn't back down taking the last three games of the match.
"I really thought we executed the game plan well in game one," said head coach Sam Atoa. "But we have to give Montana State credit for making the proper adjustments to get us out of rhythm in the final three games."
Game one went the Wolverine's way as setter Lacee Koelliker dished out 13 assists evenly among the middles and outsides. Five Wolverines notched kills in the set, and Koelliker added three dumps herself.
The Bobcats turned the tables in game two using a couple of 4-0 runs late in the set to overtake the Wolverine momentum, 30-23.
Game three was back and forth throughout with MSU holding to 27-25 lead late. The Wolverines Brooke Adams kept Utah Valley close with four kills, but a 4-1 Bobcat run closed the Wolverines out 30-26.
The Bobcats got going early in game four taking a 6-1 lead. A 7-1 run, and kills by freshman Camie Manwill and sophomore Jessica Endres charged the Wolverines and brought them to within four points. But that is as close as Utah Valley would get losing 30-21 in the end.
Overall the Wolverine middle attack was solid as Endres and Stephanie McFarland notched double-figure kills. Endres finished with 12 and McFarland had 10. Adams also helped in the middle tallying five kills.
"Our intention was to get sets to the middles and have them create some things, and they did," said Atoa. Â
Anne Olsen and Manwill were the other two Wolverines to finish with double-digit kills, finishing with 12 and 10, respectively. Both kill totals were career highs, and Koelliker finished with a season high 46 assists. Libero Maegan Hoyt notched a season-high 29 digs, which ranks second all-time for digs in a single match. She was just four off her own all-time record of 33 tallied last year against Northern Colorado.
The Wolverines will use Labor Day weekend to rest and prepare to travel to Boise to take on the Broncos of Boise State on Tuesday, September 6th. Utah Valley State owns a 2-0 overall series record against BSU.
