Wolverines Ace Their Way to a Win

OGDEN, Utah – The Utah Valley State volleyball team established a school record 14 service aces to lead them to victory in four games over Northwestern State Friday night in the first match of the Ogden Marriott Weber State Classic. Lacee Koelliker notched a school record six aces in the match to seal the win, 30-20, 30-26, 26-30, 30-26.

"Lacee's aces were huge," said Atoa. "They came at crucial times in the match."

Freshman Bethany Carron, Anne Olsen, and Maegan Hoyt each added two aces apiece in the match.

The serving was solid, but the offense wasn't too shabby either. Four Wolverines finished with double-digit kills. Freshman Camie Manwill set a new season-high to lead the way with 15 kills, Jessica Endres hit .500 and added 13 kills, Olsen notched 11, and Stephanie McFarland hit .364 with 10 kills.

"Our outsides were steady," said Atoa. "We need to get them more opportunities. Every match our middles have come through to carry us."

Koelliker, when she wasn't firing in an ace, or digging on the defensive side (she had 11 digs), was doing what she was recruited to do two years ago, set. She finished with a season-high 47 assists on the night, and recorded her second consectutive double-double (47 assists, 11 digs).

As a team the Wolverines out-hit the Demons .240 to .215, and out-dug NSU 55 to 46. The Demons (0-3) did finish with three players in double-figures in kills.

"This was a good win for us," added Atoa.

The Wolverines improve to 2-2 with the win. They will play a doubleheader on Saturday with an 11:00 am (MST) match against Air Force, and the nightcap match against host team Weber State at 7:30 pm (MST).
