Wolverines Battle but Fall in Three to BYU

Oct. 3, 2006

Orem, Utah - Utah Valley State hung with #19 BYU for most of the night but in the end the Cougars edged the Wolverines in three straight games (30-26, 30-28, 30-28) in front of a season-high 1,501 fans.

The crowd was the second highest in NCAA school history after 1,800 fans witnessed Utah Valley's first ever NCAA home game on September 2, 2003 against BYU-Hawaii.

"The fans were awesome. They saw an exciting match," said Utah Valley head coach Sam Atoa. "I can't say enough about them being here. I haven't experienced that here since I've been at UV."

Camie Manwill hit .342 and had 16 kills and Jessica Endres 11 for the Wolverines. Chelsea Goodman led BYU with 19 kills while Rachel Dyer had 14 kills in 19 attempts, hitting .579 for the match.

"I'm proud of how the girls played. We fought hard," said Atoa. "We put ourselves in a position to win but the ball just didn't bounce our way. We have nothing to hang our heads about. BYU is a great team."

With game one knotted up a 20, BYU used a 6-2 run to take control of the game. Goodman contributed four kills during a 10-6 Cougar run that closed out game one.

17 ties and 6 lead changes highlighted a tight game two. After being deadlocked late again, this time at 22, the teams traded points until BYU scored three straight to win 30-28 and take a commanding lead.

In game three, Utah Valley jumped ahead 18-11 before a the Cougars began chipping away.

The Wolverines led 23-18 when BYU went on a 5-0 run to once tie up the game.

An Endres kill put Utah Valley up 28-27 but the Cougars again went on a 3-0 run, thanks in part to two Goodman kills, to secure the match.

The loss ends UV's four match winning streak and drops the all-time record against BYU to 0-4.

The Wolverines will have the weekend off before taking on another ranked in-state opponent next Tuesday at the University of Utah.
