Berkeley, CA- The Utah Valley State men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season when they lost at Pac 10 foe Cal-Berkeley on Wednesday, 60-47. The loss drops the Wolverines to 2-1 while California is 1-0.
Ryan Toolson led Utah Valley with 14 points while Jordan Brady had 13. As a team the Wolverines shot 34 percent from the field while the Bears shot 37 percent. California was led by freshman Ryan Anderson's 20 points and Ayinde Ubaka's 18 points.
UV out rebounded Cal 33-30, led by Brett Ravenberg's six in only 13 minutes of action.
Cal connected on 25 of 32 free throws while Utah Valley went to the line five times, hitting four.
The Wolverines were held scoreless for the first 10:21 of the game and trailed 13-0 before a reverse lay up by Brady with 9:49 left in half made the score 13-2. Utah Valley then fought back to cut the Cal lead to 16-10 following a Matt Peterson basket with 7:07 left in the half.
The Wolverines deficit was three at 20-17 and 22-19 following nine straight points by Brady. UV trailed 25-21 with 1:31 remaining until halftime. Cal then scored the final four points to lead 29-21 at the break.
The Bears opened the second half by jumping out to a 38-24 lead four minutes in after a bucket by Omar Wilkes. The lead was extended to 51-31 with 11:06 to play in the game following back-to-back 3-pointers by Anderson. In that nine minute stretch the Bears hit seven of eight shots.
Utah Valley was held scoreless for a five minute period and Cal was able to extend its lead to 55-31 before Toolson hit a 3-pointer with seven minutes left in the game.
Toolson then got hot and scored 12 straight points to cut Utah Valley's deficit to 56-43 following a three-point play with 4:31 to play.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host Great Falls at the McKay Center.
