Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fairbanks and Beaman lead UVU to Milestone Win

EATON, Colorado - Apparently Utah Valley State freshmen Robyn Fairbanks and Hollie Beaman felt comfortable playing back in the confines of a high school gymnasium as the two led the Wolverines to a 75-73 win against Northern Colorado at Eaton High School in Eaton, Colorado.

The game, which had to be moved from Northern Colorado's regular gym due to scheduling conflicts, could be classified as a neutral site of sorts but nevertheless will go down as the first win over a Division-I team on the road in Utah Valley State women's basketball's short NCAA history.

"It feels good, especially with the circumstances of the game because it did not come easy," said Utah Valley head coach Cathy Nixon. "It was a battle and the girls dug down deep and found ways to win. I'm so happy for the players because they've worked so hard."

Fairbanks hit 11-for-17 from the field, scoring 23 points while pulling down 10 rebounds and Beaman added 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting to go along with seven assists and four rebounds.

After trailing 68-66 with 2:05 to go, Utah Valley went on an 8-0 run over the next 1:45 to clinch the victory. Kaydee Allred then hit two free throws to tie the game at 66 with 1:55 left.

That's when the two freshmen took over, with Fairbanks scoring two straight baskets on assists from Beaman to give the Wolverines a 72-68 lead. Beaman closed out the run with two free throws with :20 seconds on the clock to help seal the win.

"They were both great," said Nixon of the Fairbanks and Beaman. "Robyn's so steady and Hollie scored when we were unable to get the ball inside."

"We kept our composure and knew what we had to do," said Beaman. "We took control and didn't let the game just happen to us."

Beaman began the game on fire, hitting four of her first five shots including 3-for-3 from the three-point line while scoring the first 11 points of the game for Utah Valley.

With the score tied at 28, the Wolverines finished the final 3:37 of the first half on a 10-0 run on six points from Fairbanks and two each from Beaman and Sandy Marvin.

The lead reached as much as 13 at 41-28 early in the 2nd half but the Bears used an 11-2 run to cut the lead to four at 43-39 with 14:37 left in the game.

The two teams played evenly until the 6:41 mark when UNC's Heather Barbour cut the lead to four at 63-59. Northern Colorado catapulted that bucket into a 9-0 run to take a 66-63 lead with 2:40 to go.

UV tied it at 66-66 on a free throw by Beaman and a bucket by Fairbanks before freshman Jabrenta Hubbard gave the Bears a 68-66 advantage, leading to Allred's free throws that tied the game.

Hubbard led all scorers with a career-high 34 points, hitting 14-of-26 from the field to go along with five steals.

Miriam Palkki had seven points and seven rebounds for Utah Valley State while Allred also snagged seven boards.

With the win the Wolverines move to 9-13, while the Bears drop to 12-10. The two will meet again on February 21st in Orem.

Up next for the Wolverines is Texas A&M Corpus Christi next Thursday, February 16 in the McKay Center at 7:05pm.
