LAS CRUCES, NM - Jackie Roberts was a two-way threat Saturday night as she earned the victory in the circle and helped herself out at the plate as Utah Valley State picked up a 7-4 win over Morehead State at the Troy Cox Invitational in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Roberts pitched a complete game allowing only one earned run on four hits and helped herself out by delivering a bases loaded two-run single in the bottom of the 5th to give the Wolverines a three-run lead. The junior from Ogden wasn't even supposed to hit after popping her left shoulder out of its socket on Thursday.
"Jackie threw a great game tonight," said Wolverine coach Todd Fairbourne. "That's the sharpest she's been so far. She has emerged as the bonafide ace on our staff."
Utah Valley State had a season high 12 hits in the game, including a combined 9-for-15 from its top four hitters.
The Wolverines (4-1) struck first on a big two-out two-run single by senior Chris Jimenez, scoring Emily Zupan and Kaylie Neal to put UV on top 2-0 and seize control of the game early.
"It doesn't matter who you're playing, to get on board first is huge, especially in this sport," said Fairbourne.
That lead didn't last long though after Morehead State tied it in the 3rd when Bri Jones hit a two-out triple to bring home Becky King, who reached on an error. Jones then came in on a wild pitch to knot it at two.
Sara Roskelley gave the lead back to the Wolverines in the bottom of the 4th when she singled to score Neal, making the score 3-2.
Utah Valley then gave itself some breathing room in the 5th inning after Roberts knocked in two with her single and Zupan picked up on an RBI on a sac fly to deep center to give the Wolverines a 6-2 lead.
Morehead State added two runs in the top of the 6th before UV pushed one more across in the bottom of the inning for the final tally.
Utah Valley State will play twice Sunday beginning with Miami (Ohio) and 9:00am MST. They will finish off the Invitational against host New Mexico State at 11:30am MST.
