Wolverines host NC Bears Tuesday

Opponent: Northern Colorado
Date: February 21, 2006
Location: Orem, Utah (McKay Center)
Time: 4:30pm MST

This Week's Action ...
Utah Valley State will look to set a NCAA school record on Tuesday, going for its fourth straight win when Northern Colorado comes to town. The Wolverines have won three straight after last Thursday's 91-78 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Northern Colorado has lost four straight after losing at home to Corpus Christi 70-58 on Saturday night. The losing streak was started by the Wolverines when they topped the Bears 75-73 on February 11th. The win for Utah Valley State was the first road win over a Division-I opponent in the school's three-year NCAA history.

In that game freshmen Hollie Beaman and Robyn Fairbanks carried the Wolverines to the win. Beaman had 21 points, seven assists and four rebounds while Fairbanks added 23 points and 10 rebounds for 8th double double of her young career. UNC freshman Jabrenta Hubbard scored a career high 34 in the game.

Newcomer of the Week ...
Freshman Hollie Beaman was named D-I Independent Newcomer of the Week after her leading the Wolverines to the win at Northern Colorado. It's the second time that Beaman has won the award this season.

Robyn Fairbanks was nominated for Independent Player of the Week, an award she has won twice so far this season. She is also a two-time winner of the newcomer award. Senior Miriam Palkki has won the Player of the Week award one time.

Independents Update ...
Utah Valley State is currently 3-0 against D-I Independents with four more games to go. Fairbanks leads all Independent players in both scoring (17.7 ppg) and rebounding (8.8 rpg) and is third both field goal percentage (.516) and tied for 2nd in blocks per game (1.23).

Beaman is 2nd in assists (4.48) and seventh in three-point percentage (.368). Freshman Sandy Marvin is 12th in scoring (11.4) while senior Miriam Palkki is 16th in scoring (10.8) and 4th in rebounding (7.04). Sophomore Rebekah Peterson also is among the league leaders in steals with 1.61 per game, tied for 8th.

As a team the Wolverines are 2nd in scoring offense, averaging 68.3 points per game.

Last Time Out ...
Utah Valley State freshman Sandy Marvin scored a career high 23 points to lead six players in double figures as the Wolverines notched their 10th win of the season, 91-78 over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Marvin, who hit 4-for-7 from the three point line, also dished out four assists and pulled down four rebounds despite battling a touch of the flu.

"We debated even starting her," said UV head coach Cathy Nixon. "But I thought that maybe being sick would help her relax and she really did come out to a good start."

The Wolverines also got career high 12 from Veva Whitear on their way to a season high 91 points. Rounding out the six in double figures were Robyn Fairbanks, who had 19 points and seven rebounds, Rebekah Peterson who scored 14 and Miriam Palkki and Hollie Beaman each added 11 points apiece. Corpus Christi was led by Terra Andrews' 25 points and eight rebounds.

Beaman, who hails from Kingwood, Texas which is about four hours out of Corpus Christi, also dished out seven assists in helping Utah Valley State to its third straight win over Division-I Independents and a season high third straight win overall.

The 91 points scored by Utah Valley State is a school record against a Division-I opponent. It's also the 2nd highest scoring total that Corpus Christi has given up all-time, with the exception being 92 points allowed against Baylor earlier this season.

Scouting the Opposition ...
Like the Wolverines, Northern Colorado is led in scoring by a freshman. Jabrenta Hubbard averages 13.6 points per game to lead the Bears in her first season of college basketball.

Prior to their current four game losing streak, the Bears were on fire having won seven out of eight.

This is the final season of Independence for UNC as they will join the Big Sky Conference in 2007-08.

Up Next ...
The Wolverines will host North Dakota State Friday night at 7:05pm. It will be senior night for Kaydee Allred, Miriam Palkki and Jessica Scabby.
