OREM, Utah - Utah Valley State erased a 16-3 deficit to tie its match with North Dakota State, but dropped an exciting 4-2 decision at 149 pounds in the final match of the night, losing 19-16.

NDSU's Gabe Mooney took an early 4-1 lead over Justin Rawle, but Rawle scored on an escape early in the third period to cut it to 4-2. Rawle nearly tied it on a takedown with :25 seconds to go, but Mooney survived and clinched the victory for the Bison.

"Our guys worked hard. We came out prepared and it just didn't go our way," said Utah Valley head coach Cody Sanderson. "(Justin) put himself in a position to win the match, he just didn't quite finish it off in the end."

The loss ends a four-match winning streak for the Wolverines, dropping them to 6-9 on the season. North Dakota State won its sixth straight match moving its record to 6-3.

Utah Valley State got on the board first after Tanner Cowan opened with a 4-1 win over Andrew Quittschreiber at 157 pounds.

But the Bison scored 16 unanswered points, ending with Jacob Bryce's fall over Jaime Thornbald to give NDSU that 16-3 lead.

Dallin Norton kept UV in it though, scoring a tough 4-2 decision over Mike Maresh to win his fifth straight match. 

"I was very happy with Dallin again. That kid he wrestled is good," said Sanderson. "Dallin has no idea how good a guy he just beat."

Talon Vickers won his 10th straight match and 20th of the season with a 10-4 decision over Mike Meager to cut the lead to 16-9. Erkin Tadzhimetov followed that up with a 15-4 major decision over Eric Sanders to cut the Bison lead to three.

Tadzhimetov won his 27th match of the season and still has a shot at 30 wins with three matches to go. His win total is a school record for the young Wolverine wrestling program.

Daniel Polkowske followed Tadzhimetov's win with a 7-3 decision over David Cunningham at 141 pounds to tie it at 16 and give Utah Valley a shot heading into the last match.

"That's great for his confidence. He's lost a couple of tough matches," said Sanderson of Polkowske. "I really think that's going to help with the final three matches of the season."

The Wolverines will wrap up their home schedule on Saturday afternoon against Portland State at 2:00pm in the Activity Center. The match is sandwiched between the high school state wrestling sessions and is the last chance for fans to see seniors Ivan Bigney and Tadzhimetov at home.
