Long Beach, CA - The Utah Valley State softball team blew two games in the bottom of the seventh inning and lost 1-0 and 5-3 to Long Beach State. Despite the two disappointing losses Utah Valley State coach Todd Fairbourne saw some positives from the two games.
-??That is the most complete we have been all year,-?? Fairbourne said. -??Although we didn-??t score in the first game that was the best we played in all aspects. We showed that if we can make basic and routine plays we can give our selves a chance to win against anyone.-??
The Wolverines held Long Beach State scoreless through the first six innings of the first game. After UV retired the first two batters in the seventh inning, Long Beach State proceeded to put the next two runners on base with a walk and a single. Brianna Goad then singled in the winning run.
Jackie Roberts had a solid game in the circle, striking out two and scattering eight hits.
In the second game Long Beach State scored a run in the first inning. Utah Valley then took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. With one out Sara Roskelley singled and Jimenez followed with a double to score Roskelley. Cari Hamilton then walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Rachel Hartgrove walked, Heidi Boyer hit into a fielders choice, scoring Jimenez.
Long Beach State tied the game at two in the sixth inning. Utah Valley countered with a run in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead.
The run was scored when Jimenez hit a two-out triple that scored Roskelley.
But in the bottom half of the inning, the first two Long Beach runners reach base on a walk and an error. Jessica Beaver then ended the game with a homerun.
