Key Hits Pace Wolverines to Win over Saint Mary's

Reno, NV - The Utah Valley State softball team came up with timely hits and solid pitching to beat Saint Mary-??s 9-5 in the consolation game of the Wolf Pack Invitational on Sunday.

Heidi Boyer picked up her fourth win of the season, striking out three batters and scattering 10 hits. At the plate she went two for four with two homeruns. Boyer smacked three homeruns in the last two days and came up with six hits in the five games. Cari Hamilton continued her impressive weekend by going three for four. For the weekend she was 10 for 17.

-??We had timely hits today,-?? Utah Valley State coach Todd Fairbourne said. -??Heidi threw a good game and Hamilton and Boyer got it done offensively.-??

Jackie Roberts and Kaeleigh Forsyth also had two hits. The Wolverines pounded out 12 hits for the game.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run homerun by Boyer. After Saint Mary-??s tied the game at two in the top of the third the Wolverines countered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Hamilton started the inning with a single and was moved to third one batter later after a Boyer hit was bobbled by the Saint Mary-??s shortstop. Jackie Roberts then doubled home Boyer and Hamilton to give UV a 4-2 lead. With two outs Emily Zupan walked and Sara Roskelley drove in Roberts and Zupan on a double to right field to extend the Utah Valley lead to 6-2. Forsyth continued the attack with a double that scored Roskelley.

Saint Mary-??s cut the Wolverine lead to 7-5 after the top of the sixth inning. But in the bottom half of the sixth with two outs Roberts and Boyer hit back-to-back homeruns to extend the lead to 9-5.

Roberts picked up the save by allowing only one hit in the final inning and a third.
