Wolverines Hold off Texas-San Antonio to Win 3rd Straight

Sept. 29, 2006

San Antonio, Texas - The Utah Valley State volleyball team held off a late charge by Texas-San Antonio to win its 3rd straight match 3-2 (30-24, 30-26, 26-30, 27-30, 15-11) Friday night in San Antonio.

The Wolverines (10-6) took a 2-0 lead before the Roadrunners (9-8)threatened to come all the way back, stretching the match to five games.

In the decisive 5th, Utah Valley used a 5-0 run to break an 8-8 tie on its way to the 15-11 win.

"In the 4th game we talked about character and stepping up to challenges," said head coach Sam Atoa. "After that I think we gained some momentum and when it mattered most we came together and played well. It was nice to see that."

Sophomore Camie Manwill had her 5th 20/20 match of the season with 22 kills and 26 digs. Jessica Endres had 11 kills for UV while Brooke Adams had 9 kills and hit .438 for the match.

"Camie played well and Brooke had a nice game in hitting .400...it's what we needed from her," said Atoa.

Connie Picard had a match-high 23 kills as four Roadrunners reached double figures in kills while Erin McMillan had 41 digs for San Antonio.

Utah Valley State outhit San Antonio .255 to .173 and improved to 4-0 on the year in five-game matches.

The Wolverines will try to run its win streak to four tomorrow night in Edinburg, Texas against Texas-Pan American.
