Brookings, SD- The Utah Valley State men's basketball team begins a two-game road trip through the Dakota's on Thursday when they play at South Dakota State. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. and the game can be heard live on 1400 KSTAR. The trip then continues on Saturday when the Wolverines play at North Dakota State.
This weeks games also starts United Basketball League play, a six team playing league with other Independent teams. North Dakota State, South Dakota State, IPFW, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley are all participating in the league.
This is the third meeting between Utah Valley and South Dakota State. Last year each team won on its home court. South Dakota State won 66-56 in Brookings while the Wolverines won 62-41 in Orem.
South Dakota State comes into Thursday's game with a 4-14 record. Matt Cadwell leads the Jacks in scoring at 13.8 points a game. Kai Williams is second in scoring at 9.8 and first in rebounding at 5.9. As a team SDSU is scoring 61.9 points a game and averaging 32.7 rebounds. South Dakota State's four wins have come against Arkansas State, Denver, UMKC and Montana State.
"South Dakota State has arguably played the toughest schedule out of any independent," Utah Valley State coach Dick Hunsaker said. "They have an outstanding player in Cadwell, an All-Independent selection from a year ago, along with a very balanced scoring attack. Coach Nagy has done a great job of building and energizing his team."
The Wolverines are 12-6 and have won six of the last seven games. Last week Utah Valley beat Longwood and Johnson & Wales at home. Ryan Toolson leads UV in scoring at 13.4 points an outing while David Heck is second at 13.1 points a game. Jordan Brady leads the team in rebounding at 5.3. He is also hitting on 59.8 percent of his shots. The Wolverines are scoring 69.6 points as game and holding teams to 61 points.
