Stats

BOISE, Idaho - In its first overtime game since the 2005-06 season, Utah Valley fell 73-72 at Boise State in the Wolverines season-opener in an exciting back-and-forth game.

Utah Valley, who last played in overtime on Dec. 20, 2005 against Cleveland State, were outscored 14-13 in the extra period after the two teams played to a 59-59 tie in regulation. Boise State hit a pair of three pointers in overtime to build a six-point advantage and extended its lead to as many as eight points before the Wolverines came battling back.

"We battled and we never quit," UV head coach Dick Hunsaker said. "We certainly made a lot of errors. The offensive rebounds and turnovers were eye-popping, but I thought we fought hard. Give Boise State a lot of credit for finding a way to win on a sub-par shooting night."

The Wolverines were led by Ryan Toolson's 29 points. Jordan Brady had a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

Boise State jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the early moments of the game before Utah Valley went on a 16-6 run to jump ahead of the Broncos 16-12 midway through the first half. Back-to-back jumpers by Richard Troyer and Toolson gave the Wolverines a 10-point lead, the only double-digit advantage by either team in the game.

BSU responded finishing the half on an 18-10 run to cut UV's lead to two points, 35-33, at the break.

In the second half, the game was a back-and-forth affair with each team trading the lead several times. In a game that featured 10 lead changes and 10 ties, most came in the second half as neither team built larger than a four-point lead in the period. BSU had a late two-point advantage before a pair of Toolson foul shots tied the game at 59 with 1:57 remaining. Neither team scored in the final 1:57 as the game went to overtime.

In the overtime period, the Broncos built a big lead and were able to hang on to the one-point advantage.

Utah Valley will next travel to No. 12 Marquette on Monday at 6 p.m. (MT) The game can be heard live on AM 1400 KSTAR.
