OREM, Utah - In a physical, hard-fought battle that went down to the wire, Portland State edged Utah Valley, 60-53, in overtime in the Wolverines Homecoming game.
The Vikings Andre Murray hit a three pointer with 18 seconds remaining giving UV the final shot of the game. PSU defended the Wolverines well down the stretch and contested UV's final shot that just missed as time expired. In overtime, the Vikings outscored UV 13-6 to get the win.
"It was a hard-fought, tough, physical game," UV head coach Dick Hunsaker said. "I thought we made a good spontaneous play to get a shot off at the end, it just didn't go in."
Ryan Toolson led UV with 22 points and three rebounds while Joe Walker filled up the stats sheet with 10 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and four steals. Jeremiah Dominguez led four Portland State players in double-figures with 19.
Defense ruled the game as both teams shot under 40 percent from the field.
"I thought Portland State's defense was terrific," Hunsaker said. "Dominguez was exceptional for them. They are a fine team."
The game featured nine ties and 10 lead changes and the largest lead of the game was Portland State's eight-point overtime advantage. UV held a three-point advantage at the halftime break.
After switching the leads several times early in the second half, UV took a 34-33 lead on a Toolson three pointer with 8:28 remaining. The Wolverines extended their lead to five at 41-36 before PSU went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 42-41 with 3:48 left. The game went back-and-forth from there, ultimately going to overtime after the teams finished regulation tied at 49.
The Wolverines will head back out on the road next week when they travel to Southern California to take on Cal State Northridge Wednesday.
