Game One Box Score - Game Two Box Score
GREELEY, Colorado - Utah Valley tallied 32 hits and 22 runs in a doubleheader at Northern Colorado, but it was only good enough to earn the Wolverines a split (16-8, 6-11) in the opening duo of a four game series on Saturday.
"We definitely hit the ball well enough to win both games," said head coach Todd Fairbourne. "But defensively we didn't play well in the second game, especially over the final two innings."
Utah Valley (21-25) had its win streak upped to six games after winning the opener before the Bears (6-36) snapped that streak while also ending their own five-game skid.
In the opener Heidi Boyer went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a single and a monster blast over the scoreboard in right center for her team-high ninth home run of the season. Boyer drove in four runs while Sara Roskelley had three RBI.
The Wolverines fell behind 5-1 after an inning of play but had a five-run third to take a 6-5 advantage.
Utah Valley began the third with five straight singles to with runs driven in by Cherylyn McGraw, Boyer and Corie Jensen. Then with one out in the inning, Natalie Paulsen and Roskelley had back-to-back RBI singles to contribute to the five-run stanza.
After Northern Colorado added a single run in the bottom of the third, the Wolverines kept the offensive pressure on by plating four more runs in the fourth.
Boyer's round tripper came in the fifth after a McGraw single, putting UV up 12-6.
The Wolverine lead reached as much as nine, 16-7, after Jensen doubled home McGraw in a four-run sixth. UNC was able to push only one run across in the bottom of the sixth, allowing the game to end early with UV up eight runs.
Jackie Roberts (10-8) earned the complete-game victory after striking out five batters and giving up five earned runs.
In the nightcap, Utah Valley saw an early 5-1 lead turn into a 6-5 deficit after the Bears scored five consecutive runs, the last coming in the bottom of the fifth.
The Wolverines tied it in the top of the sixth before UNC scored five in the bottom of the inning for the final 11-6 tally.
Despite the loss, UV has still beaten the Bears in five out of six games so far this season.
Boyer had two hits and two more runs batted in during the second game to finish the day 7-for-9 with six RBI, a home run, three doubles and a triple.
The two teams will close out the series with a doubleheader beginning at 12pm MT.
