Five-Game Luck Runs out for Wolverines Against Arizona State

Sept. 8, 2007

Orem, Utah - For the third time in two days, Utah Valley went all the way into the fifth game before its match was decided. But for the first time the fifth game ended in a loss for the Wolverines as Arizona State held off UV (28-30, 30-28, 30-25, 26-30, 15-6) at the UVU/LaQuinta Inn & Suites Invitational.

The win for ASU created a three-way tie with three teams (San Jose State, ASU and UV) finishing 2-1, giving SJSU the championship by virtue of a tiebreaker (game win-loss percentage).

Camie Manwill led Utah Valley with 25 kills in the match while Jessica Endres had 22. Arizona State got 26 kills from Paige Mittelstaedt, 73 assists from Marina Mercer and 38 digs from Sydney Donahue.

Allyce Wilson had 22 digs and had 92 for the tournament and was named the tournament's defensive MVP.

Endres and Kristin Anderson were both named to the all-tournament team by the coaches.

In the match, the Wolverines trailed 21-16 in game one before Kayli Broadbent led UV on a 7-2 run to help tie the game at 23. Broadbent had three kills in the run and six for the game as she, Endres and Manwill combined for 20 of UV's 23 kills in the game one victory.

Game two was nearly the exact opposite of the opener, with the Wolverines building a 21-16 lead but allowing the Sun Devils to come from behind to win by two.

Utah Valley built an early 8-4 edge in game three before ASU reeled off an 11-1 run to take a 15-9 lead. The Wolverines closed within three at 19-16 but couldn't get any closer as the Devils to a 2-1 lead.

Once again game four saw one team build a lead and blow it. The Wolverines led 18-12 before an 11-2 Arizona State run saw the Sun Devils build a 23-20 lead. Utah Valley answered though by scoring four straight capped by a Broadbent ace. Manwill iced game four with a kill, sending the match to the fifth game.

In the fateful game five, Arizona State built a comfortable edge and never let the Wolverines back into the game, winning 15-6.

In an earlier match against San Jose State, Allyce Wilson shattered a school-record with 39 digs as Utah Valley saw a 2-0 lead disappear before prevailing in five games (30-27, 30-22, 23-30, 27-30, 15-10) over the Spartans.

Wilson, who broke Maegan Hoyt's record of 33 set in 2004, had nine digs in the deciding fifth game.

Endres had 24 kills and hit .420 while Manwill had 22 kills and 23 digs. Broadbent had 17 kills and Kristin Anderson had 10 as UV had four players reach double figures.

After edging the Spartans in game one, the Wolverines took what seemed to be a commanding 2-0 lead with an eight-point win in the second game. San Jose State battled back, winning game three by seven points and game four by three before taking control of the match in game five with a 5-1 start.

But the Wolverines used a 6-1 run with three points coming on Endres kills to take a 7-6 lead.

Utah Valley closed out the game on a 6-2 run capped by a service ace from Manwill to win the match.

In other action on Saturday, Arizona State swept Weber State and San Jose State beat Weber State in four games.

Next week the Wolverines will travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan for the Michigan/Nike Invitational where they will take #14 Michigan, Georgia Tech and Temple.
