Broadbent Gets 20 Kills, UVU Drops Close Match in Boise

Oct. 28, 2008

BOISE, Idaho - Despite double-digit performances in the kills column from two separate Wolverines, the Utah Valley University women's volleyball team fell in five sets (13-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-13, 17-19) at Boise State Tuesday. With the loss UVU falls to 7-10 on the season, and BSU improves to 7-15.

Sophomore outside hitter Kayli Broadbent led all attackers with 20 kills in the match, marking the third time this season she has recorded 20+ kills in a match. She also added two assists, one service ace, and eight digs to her .292 attack percentage. Broadbent had 194 kills on the year when the match began, and now has 214 in 2008.

Junior middle blocker Kristin Anderson chipped in 11 kills with no attack errors for a .478 attack percentage and six total blocks. The Wolverines hit .238 as a team and recorded 10 total team blocks on the night.

"Tonight's match was very, very competitive," UVU head coach Sam Atoa said. "We had our opportunities to swing for the match in the final set. We can't hand our heads because it was an exciting match, and we played well. Unfortunately we just came up short, but I'm still very proud of the way our team played tonight and responded to tough competition."

Utah Valley dropped the first set 13-25 as it hit .132 to Boise State's .586. The Wolverines retaliated in the second set, though, improving both their offense and their defense on their way to a 25-21 win. UVU hit .357 with three total team blocks in the second set to BSU's .171 attack percentage and one total team block.

The third set went to the Broncos 25-16. Utah Valley recorded 10 kills in the set with one total team block, but hit only .028 to Boise State's .333. The Wolverines responded again after a tough third set by winning the first five points in the fourth. They rolled to win the set 25-13 after hitting .478 as a team and holding the Broncos to a -.065 attack percentage. UVU's success was bolstered by six total team blocks as BSU did not record a single block in the set.

The fifth and deciding set went to the Broncos 19-17 on Boise State's second match point. The Wolverines faced match point down 14-15, but came back to earn their own match point up 17-16. BSU then won the last three points and therefore the match. Utah Valley hit .364 in the set, but Boise State hit .400 to edge the visiting Wolverines.

The loss marks the first time UVU has fallen at the hands of Boise State in five total meetings.

Utah Valley's next match will be Thursday in Orem against Seattle University with the start time slated for 7 p.m.
