UVU Drops First Home Volleyball Match

Oct. 3, 2008

OREM - The Utah Valley University women's volleyball team fell to 3-1 at home and 3-8 overall in a four-set loss (23-25, 25-23, 14-25, 12-25) to Cal State Bakersfield (10-8) Friday night at the Shurian Family Activity Center.

Sophomore outside hitter Kayli Broadbent had 12 kills for the Wolverines and junior middle blocker Kristin Anderson had nine. Junior libero Allyce Wilson also had 13 digs in the match.

"I have to hand it to Bakersfield tonight," UVU head coach Sam Atoa said. "They served well, executed their offense, and made the right defensive adjustments. We just hope we can learn from this and respond better tomorrow."

Neither team lead by more than three points, and there were nine tied scores and two lead changes in the first set which went to CSUB 25-23. Utah Valley had 14 kills to Bakersfield's 11 in the set, but also had eight attack errors to Bakersfield's three. Both teams recorded two total team blocks in the set.

The Wolverines trailed for much of the second set, but took the lead when it mattered most. Utah Valley took its first lead of the set at 19-18, allowed Bakersfield to tie the set again at 19, and then took the lead for good at 20-19. The Roadrunners would not tie the set again as UVU won 25-23 on Broadbent's eighth kill of the match. She and redshirt freshman Jaicee Kuresa each had five kills in the set.

The third set went to CSUB 25-14 thanks to 14 kills on a .545 attack percentage. UVU hit .286 in the set with only three attack errors, but struggled to hold off the Roadrunner attack. The deciding set also went to the Roadrunners 12-25.

The last time the Roadrunners came to Orem the Wolverines beat them in three sets to win the 2007 Independent Championship.

The same two teams will be in action again Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Shurian Family Activity Center.
