Wolverines Set School Attack Record in Sweep

Oct. 7, 2008

OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University women's volleyball team (5-8) set a school record with a .507 attack percentage as it swept Chicago State (0-20) in straight sets (25-5, 25-9, 25-14) Tuesday night at the Shurian Family Activity Center.

Freshmen Sarah Clement and Melissa Fifita each had 10 kills in the win as the Wolverines recorded 46 total kills to the Cougars' 13. UVU also tallied 10 service aces in the match, and held Chicago State to a -.150 attack percentage.

"We set goals to get better at passing, serving, and hitting tonight," Utah Valley head coach Sam Atoa said. "We had to focus on reaching those goals no matter who we played. We've got some young but talented individuals that are only going to get better as we continue to focus on those goals."

Utah Valley won the first set 25-5 hitting .611 with 11 kills and no errors. The Wolverines won the final 19 points of the set with sophomore outside hitter Kayli Broadbent at the service line. In that span Broadbent recorded five service aces. Clement led all attackers with five kills on five swings in the set.

The second set went to UVU 25-9 with redshirt freshman Jaicee Kuresa leading all hitters with six kills. Freshman setter Chelsea Fa'alogo set the team to a .464 attack percentage as the team recorded 16 kills on 28 swings with only three attack errors. Defensively, the Wolverines held the Cougars to only four kills and a -.140 attack percentage.

Atoa's team sealed the match with a 25-14 win in the third set. Fifita had seven kills in the set and Fa'alogo paced the team to a .483 attack percentage. The Cougars hit .217 in the set with six kills.

Earlier Tuesday junior middle blocker Kristin Anderson and junior libero Allyce Wilson were named the Great West Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for their performances against Cal State Bakersfield last week.

The Wolverines' next match will be Friday in Edinburg, Texas as they take on the Lady Broncs of Texas-Pan American at 6 p.m. MT.
