Wisconsin Edges Utah Valley

Feb. 10, 2008

Box Score

ST. GEORGE, Utah - In its fourth one-run contest in five games to start the season, Utah Valley fell, 4-3 to Big Ten Conference opponent Wisconsin on the final day of the Red Desert Classic.

The Wolverines fell to 2-3 with the defeat. All of UV's losses were by just one run in the early season tournament.

"I would rather be 5-0 right now," Utah Valley head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "But, I'm happy with the way our team played this weekend. We played solid in almost all areas."

The Wolverines got on the scoreboard first and it took little time as lead-off batter Meghan Woodworth led the game off with an opposite field home run. The long ball was the first of her career and the first Utah Valley homer of the season.

Wisconsin tied the game in the top of the second inning after a hit batter came around to score on a double by Letty Olivarez.

The Wolverines came back in their side of the second with a two-run inning to take a 3-1 advantage. UV loaded the bases on a walk, fielder's choice and single. Woodworth picked up her second RBI of the game by drawing a bases loaded walk. Cherylyn McGraw also picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice to close out the scoring for the Wolverines.

Wisconsin came back to tie the game at 3-3 with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth and took the lead in the fifth on a solo shot by Wisconsin.

UV will have a week off before returning to action Feb. 22 at the Troy Cox Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. UV will take on five teams at that tournament starting with Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
