Wolverines Coast to Win After Big First Half

Feb. 9, 2008

Box Score

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back to win its 15th game of the season, 70-52 over Texas-Pan American on Saturday, tying the school's season record for wins at the NCAA level.

Robyn Fairbanks led the way with 23 points and 12 rebounds while Julie McMurray chipped in 17 and Sandy Marvin scored 16. Jordyn Bowen had seven points and a career-high 10 rebounds, eight of which came in the first half, as the Wolverines (15-7) out-rebounded the Lady Broncs (10-14) 44-28.

"I thought Jordyn did a really good job of helping us set the tone early...on both ends of the floor," said head coach Cathy Nixon.

Marvin played just 15 minutes while nursing a sprained ankle that she sustained in Thursday's win over NJIT. She had 12 points in eight first half minutes on four three-pointers.

"She was on crutches yesterday, she was definitely hurting," said Nixon. "Her shot was falling and she just had a really good game under the cirumstances."

Defensively, Utah Valley limited UTPA to 31.7 percent shooting and held the Broncs' top scorer, LeKeisha Gray, to zero points on 0-for-7 shooting. 52 points is also the lowest point total allowed by UV this season. The Wolverines shot 50.9 percent from the field for the game with Fairbanks hit 10 of her 14 attempts.

Fairbanks scored six of the first 10 points in leading UV to a 10-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest. Texas-Pan American went on an 8-3 run to get within five with 11:19 left in the half.

It was 20-13 when Marvin hit the first of her four first-half three's to lead the Wolverines on a 24-9 run to close out the half.

In the second half, the Lady Broncs trimmed the lead to 13 at 60-47 with 4:11 remaining but were never able to forge a serious threat after that.

Fairbanks double-double was her 10th of the season and 30th of her career while she also reached the 20-point plateau for the 10th straight game.

Prior to the game, Marvin was honored for reaching 1,000 career points, a feat she accomplished against Chicago State on January 28th.

Utah Valley moved to 5-1 all-time against UTPA with the possibility of another game looming at the year-end Division I Independent Championships on the campus of Texas-Pan American from March 6-8.

The Wolverines will have next week off before playing at NJIT on February 21st and at Chicago State on February 23rd. They'll play their final home game on March 1st against CSU Bakersfield on Senior Day for Susie Cornejo and Rebekah Peterson.
