OREM, Utah - A career night by Ryan Toolson led Utah Valley to a thrilling 99-89 overtime victory over Chicago State, the only Division I independent that had defeated the Wolverines. The win was UV's (12-13) sixth straight.
Toolson scored a career-high 38 points, which tied a school record for points in a game with former standout Wolverine Ronnie Price. Toolson hit 11-of-17 from the field and 13-for-13 from the from the foul line. Richard Troyer posted a double-double with 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Jordan Brady scored 18, pulled down nine rebounds and had a team-high six assists while Josh Olsen and Kevin Woods scored 10 apiece. David Holston led Chicago State with 22 points and seven assists.
"It was a great ball game tonight and a great win for us," Utah Valley head coach Dick Hunsaker said. "Chicago State is a good basketball team. They are quick, athletic and fearless. Holston is a handful. Toolson was terrific for us tonight. He has the will to win. I thought Kevin Woods had a great game for us tonight on both sides of the ball."
The two teams battled back and forth to begin the game, playing to a 14-14 tie seven minutes into the game. After a 7-1 Chicago State run gave the Cougars a 21-15 advantage, Utah Valley scored seven consecutive points to re-gain the lead.
With Chicago State ahead 23-22, Utah Valley went on a 25-9 run over the final 7:15 of the half to take a 15-point lead to the break.
Toolson led all scorers with 14 points at the break while Brady added 12 for the Wolverines. Holston and Mike Wilson led the Cougars with eight points apiece.
CSU came out of the halftime break on its own huge run, outscoring the Wolverines 28-9 over the first eight minutes of the final half. The Cougars built a four point lead before the teams battled back and fourth over the final 12 minutes.
After Chidozie Chukwumah scored a lay up with 2:58 left in regulation to give the Cougars an 80-76 advantage. Toolson scored a pair of deep, contested three-pointers down the stretch to tie the score at 82-all with 58 seconds remaining. Each teams' last possessions yielded no points to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, the teams remained tied with 2:04 remaining when a Troyer put-back dunk lit a fire for the Wolverines. Troyer's dunk put UV ahead 88-86 and started a 13-3 run to finish the game.
Utah Valley will have the week off before returning to the road at Savannah State next Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 11 a.m. (MT)
