RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Iowa proved to be too much for Utah Valley as the Hawkeyes sprinted to an 11-1 defeat of the Wolverines in UV's final game at the Amy S. Harrison Classic hosted by UC Riverside.
"The kids need to learn to play in pressure situations," UV head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "We need to rise and play at the levels required in order to be successful."
Utah Valley was plagued by errors. The Wolverines (4-13) had six miscues that led to six unearned Iowa runs.
After the Hawkeyes (14-5) scored a run in the top of the first, UV responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run of its own. Meghan Woodworth led the game off with a double to left field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alli Bramwell. Cherylyn McGraw picked up the run on a ground out to short.
From there, it would be all Iowa as the the Hawkeyes scored five in the second to blow the game open. UV would be held off the scoreboard offensively as the Hawkeyes would scre runs in each of the five innings, including three in the fourth.
Utah Valley will next play when the Wolverines travel to Las Vegas next week to take on Nebraska and UNLV in the UNLV Rebel Round Robin. The Wolverines will face the Rebels three times and the Cornhuskers once in a two-day stretch.
