Box Score
OREM, Utah - A trio of BYU pitchers kept Utah Valley off the scoreboard as the Wolverines fell 7-0 to the Cougars after four seventh inning runs.
"I'm always disappointed with a loss," Utah Valley head coach Todd Fairborne said. "With that said, I don't think the final score is indicative of how close the game was. Alli (Bramwell) pitched a great game. She pitched her best game of the year in terms of hitting her spots and competing against a tough team."
Bramwell surrendered just three runs and four hits in five innings of work. Meghan Woodworth and Cherylyn McGraw had the two UV base hits. Jessica Purcell led BYU, going 2-for-3 from the plate with a pair of home runs and six RBI.
After walking the first batter she faced, Bramwell set down six consecutive Cougars over the first two innings. The Wolverines had a good scoring opportunity it their side of the first after Woodworth led the game off with a hit and McGraw walked putting two on with just one out. BYU's Christie Zinanti struck out the next two UV batters to get out of the inning.
BYU got on the board in the third after back-to-back hits opened the inning. Bramwell got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam by surrendering just one run on a Purcell sacrifice fly.
The Cougars scored two in the fifth on a two-run shot by Purcell and added four in the seventh.
BYU's pitching by committee struck out seven and walked four as Paige Affleck picked up the victory and Christina Trice pitched three effective innings for the save.
Weather permitting, the Wolverines will resume play tomorrow as they will head to Logan to take on Utah State in a double header scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
