The 2008 Utah Valley softball season ended with a 6-1 loss at BYU Tuesday as the Wolverines finish the season with a record of 17-34.
Junior Heidi Stocks recorded the only hit for UVU on the day in her last game in the green and gold, and junior Lauren Augino scored the only run. Utah Valley head coach Todd Fairbourne said he is proud of the way his team battled not only in Tuesday's game, but throughout the season.
"We've seen some rough times this season, but our girls have always stuck it out," he said. "The credit goes to them. The way we finished makes me hopeful for next year. It's going to be tough to replace the girls that are leaving the team, but we have some great younger players and recruits coming back next year."
The Wolverines scored their lone run of the game down 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning. Augino and and junior Magan Niemann each earned two-out walks, and Augino advanced to third on the wild pitch that was the fourth ball to Niemann. With freshman Meghan Woodworth at the plate, Niemann stole second, and Augino bolted for home on the throw to second. The Cougars cut the throw off and fired it back to the plate in an attempt to save the run, but Augino avoided the tag and put Utah Valley's first run on the board.
Utah Valley finished the season winning five of its last seven games, including the program's first win over in-state rival Utah and four straight wins over independent powerhouse Cal State Bakersfield.
