OREM, Utah - Sandy Wall and Robyn Fairbanks each made their 100th career game a memorable one as the two combined to score 49 points in Utah Valley's 81-73 win over Weber State on Tuesday night. The win came in front of a record crowd of 1,341 in the Wolverines' (9-8) WBCA Pink ZoneTM game.
Wall continued her torrid 3-point shooting, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and finishing with a game-high 26 points. The senior guard is 13-for-15 from the 3-point line during a three-game UVU winning streak, its longest of the season..
Fairbanks, who earlier in the day earned her fifth Great West Conference Player of the Week award, had yet another stellar night with 23 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks. It's the 70th consecutive game that Fairbanks has reached double figures in scoring and also her 41st career double-double.
Julie McMurray also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Asumi Nakayama finished with seven points and nine assists.
The Wildcats (6-14) had several players with standout nights statistically as well. Sarah Conner led Weber State with 20 points, hitting six 3-pointers in the game while three others finished with double-doubles. Tonya Schnibbe had 10 points and 13 assists, Karlee Weight finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Caitlin Anderson had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Weber State was able to stay in the game thanks to Conner's shooting and to 20 offensive rebounds, leading to 18 second chance points.
The Wolverines led by as much as 16 in the second half, but the Wildcats never went away. Weber State got within five, 74-69, with 1:40 left before UVU was able to get to the free throw line to close out the game and even up the all-time series at two wins apiece.
In the first half Utah Valley trailed 19-18 at the 9:49 mark before a 13-0 run over the next five minutes and 20 seconds gave the Wolverines a 31-19 advantage. UVU carried a 39-28 lead into half time when Wall knocked down a three with four seconds left before the break.
For the game Utah Valley shot 50.9 percent (29-for-57) from the field while Weber State hit 28-for-79 (35.4 percent). Both teams took care of the ball, each turning it over just eight times, a season low for Utah Valley.
During the three-game winning streak, Fairbanks is averaging 29.0 points and 12.3 rebounds while Wall is scoring 22.7 per game. Fairbanks is averaging a national-best 25.1 points per game on the season.
The Wolverines will now host future Great West Conference opponent Chicago State on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Prior to the game Fairbanks was honored with a ball commemorating her 2,000th career point that she scored earlier in the season ... portions of Tuesday's ticket sales along with fan donations will go to help Orem resident Joyce Wheeler, who has been battling breast cancer for four years ... Wheeler and her family were introduced to the crowd at half time ... there was a moment of silence prior to the game and Wolverine coaches wore upside down pink ribbons in honor of North Carolina State head coach Kay Yow, who lost her battle with breast cancer last week.
