Wolverines Sweep SUU; Manwill Now UVU's All-Time Kills Leader

Oct. 20, 2009

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Utah Valley senior OH Camie Manwill recorded 17 kills to pass Jessica Endres for the most kills in school history Tuesday night in the Wolverines' 25-16, 25-13, 25-19 victory over Southern Utah.

Manwill, who hit at .550 (17-27) against the T-Birds, entered the match needing just three kills to pass Endres and she had seven kills in the first set to move into first-place all-time. She now has 1,416 career kills.

"We needed Camie to step up tonight especially after struggling Saturday (at Idaho State)," UVU volleyball coach Sam Atoa said. "It was good to be able to see her get her rhythm and do some good things."

Teammate Kayli Broadbent, the reigning Great West Conference Offensive Player of the Week, had eight kills and seven digs, while Chelsea Fa'alogo added 32 assists, five kills and eight digs. Allyce Jones had 11 digs and Kathleen Stevens had nine digs. Lanni O'Reilly had two service aces.

The Wolverines (15-7, 5-1) are 2-0 all-time against Southern Utah and they have now won three matches in a row (SUU, Idaho State and Texas-Pan American). Utah Valley won the first meeting between the two schools, 3-0, on Sept. 22 in Orem.

"I am happy for the whole team in how we came together to play well in an environment that was really tough," he said.

The Wolverines had trouble shaking the T-Birds in the first set and trailed 12-11. Manwill tied the score at 12-12 with a kill. With O'Reilly serving, the Wolverines rattled off three straight points on back-to-back kills by Manwill and Sarah Clement and an attack error by the T-Birds to take the lead for good.

SUU managed to cut the lead 15-14 before the Wolverines scored six straight points. Fa'alogp served five of the six points. Two straight attack errors by SUU put an end to UVU's 25-16 victory.

The Wolverines led 13-10 in the second and rallied to lead 23-13 in cruising to the 25-13 victory.

In the huge run, Erica Nish and Dani Robison had two kills, Manwill and Fa'alogo had one each, O'Reilly recorded a service ace, and SUU had three attack errors.

Utah Valley trailed 12-9 in the third set, but three kills by Manwill, a kill by Broadbent, a service ace by Stevens and an SUU attack error led to a 6-0 UVU run and a 15-12 lead. The Wolverines pushed the lead to a set-high six before winning 25-19.

"I thought the girls played well. We controlled our passing and serving," Atoa said. "We made it difficult for Southern Utah to get any rhythm. I thought our girls executed very well."

Utah Valley returns to Great West Conference action Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Shurian Family Activity Center.
