OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University (11-5, 3-0) increased its winning streak to six matches Monday night with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 non-conference victory over Boise State (1-14).
"We've had a few of these matches before against teams where their record doesn't indicate how good they are, but Boise is a pretty good team," UVU volleyball coach Sam Atoa said.
The Wolverines, who haven't lost since falling to No. 12 Oregon on Sept. 16, have beaten the Broncos twice this season and now hold a 6-1 all-time advantage over Boise State.
"I can't say enough as far as how the girls are playing right now," Atoa said. "They are learning and getting better and sticking to the plan as far as our execution. I'm happy with their effort."
Camie Manwill paced the Wolverines with nine kills while Kayli Broadbent added seven and Dani Robison, Faith Tusieseina and Chelsea Fa'alogo added six each in the victory over Boise State.
Sarah Clement recorded a career-high eight block assists and two solo blocks while Tusieseina and Robison added five and four block assists, respectively. Allyce Jones added 21 digs.
The first set was tied 15-15 before Robison recorded three straight service points to build a 19-15 UVU lead. The Wolverines took advantage of Boise State errors in scoring three of their last six points on Bronco miscues.
Broadbent and Manwill had three kills each, while Clement recorded four block assists and Manwill had three.
Kathleen Stevens served the Wolverines to a 4-1 advantage in the second set. UVU then increased the lead to 16-10 before leading by a set-high seven at 24-17. The Broncos scored six straight points before Broadbent, who had four kills in the set, closed it out with a kill.
Manwill paced the Wolverines in the set with five kills and Tusieseina had three. The Wolverines hit at .333 in the set after hitting .185 in the first set.
In the third and final set, the Wolverines led for the majority of the match, but Boise State tied the score at 21-21. Thanks to kills by Fa'alogo and Tusieseina the Wolverines were at match point at 24-22. The Broncos got a kill to pull within a point before Fa'alogo, who had four kills in the set, ended the match with a kill.
The Wolverines embark on their first conference road trip of the season when they travel to Chicago State (0-15, 0-4) on Thursday and NJIT (12-5, 3-0), which is undefeated in league play, on Saturday.
