Broadbent, Garfield Lead UVU to Four-Set Win over HBU

Nov. 5, 2009

HOUSTON - Utah Valley's Kayli Broadbent recorded a team-high 15 kills and seven digs, and Chelsey Garfield added nine kills and 11 digs in leading the Wolverines to a 25-16, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20 Great West Conference victory over Houston Baptist Thursday night.

With the victory, the Wolverines (18-9) improve to 8-2 in GWC play - one game behind league-leading North Dakota - with two conference matches remaining. The Wolverines travel for a meeting with Texas-Pan American tonight and then host NJIT on Nov. 12 in their final regular season home match of the season.

The first set with the Huskies was tied at 11-11 before a kill by Broadbent started a 6-0 run for the Wolverines. In all, UVU scored 12 of 13 points to put the first set away.

Broadbent had two service aces and two kills in the stretch and Kathleen Stevens recorded one of her two service aces on the night.

UVU hit at .500 in the opening set and HBU (11-18, 3-8) hit at -.037.

The Wolverines hit .000 in dropping the second set 21-25. UVU, which trailed for the better part of the set, tied the score at 18-18 before HBU reeled off seven of the next 10 points to win the set.

"Overall, I felt like we did a nice job," UVU volleyball coach Sam Atoa said. "Often times we come out great and win the first set with a lot of confidence, and then we relax in the second. That's what happened tonight. We got overconfident and didn't play our best."

The Wolverines, however, jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set. Garfield served the Wolverines to a 3-0 lead, and later Broadbent served UVU to the 10-4 lead. The Wolverines' lead got as high as seven points on several occasions. Leading 22-16, Broadbent had two kills and Nish added another to win the set for UVU, 25-18.

UVU trailed by as many as five, 15-10, in the fourth set. Two errors by HBU and kills by Nish and Garfield pulled the Wolverines to within a point. UVU tied the score at 16-16 on a service ace by Garfield and took the lead for good on a kill by Chelsea Fa'alogo.

Stevens' second service ace of the match upped UVU's lead to 23-18 and the Wolverines won the set and match on kills by Fa'alogo and Dani Robison.

Behind Broadbent and Garfield, Fa'alogo had seven kills and 33 assists, while Nish had six kills and Robison had four kills, a service ace and seven block assists. Allyce Jones added 21 digs.
