BROOKINGS, S.D. - Utah Valley University's wrestling team won their eighth consecutive dual Friday evening at South Dakota State as the Wolverines (8-2, 2-0 WWC) downed Western Wrestling Conference foe SDSU (7-9-1, 0-4 WWC) 35-14, on the campus of South Dakota State.
"The guys came out and were real aggressive tonight," UVU head wrestling coach Greg Williams said. "We wrestled very well, did the things we wanted to do and overall we looked good. Any time you travel this far it is hard on the guys but tonight I thought we really answered the bell and we are continuing to make improvements in every match."
UVU started out the matchup at 184-pounds and the Wolverines' Casen Eldredge did a nice job to get Utah Valley on the scoreboard as he won his match by major decision (10-2) over SDSU's Zach Blindert. South Dakota State's No. 16 ranked Tyler Sorenson then gave the Jacks the lead as he beat UVU's Adam Fager (197) by technical fall (18-2). Utah Valley then gave up the forfeit at heavyweight giving SDSU the 11-4 advantage.
The Wolverines then rolled off a six match win streak starting with sophomore Benjamin Kjar's (125) win by fall over the Jacks' Alan Marvin in the first period (2:25). UVU's Flint Ray (133) then won by forfeit, Jeffrey Newby (141) followed with a 5-2 decision over Dustin Walraven. The Wolverines Justin Morrill (149) won by major decision, 12-1, over Nick Flynn. UVU's Jamison Moss's (157) preparation for Friday's match really paid off as he won by fall over Marc Wermersen in the first period (2:21). Utah Valley's Jeb Clark (165) rounded out the Wolverines win streak as he pinned his competitor Weston Ginther in the second period (4:15).
In all Utah Valley won three out of the ten bouts by fall, including two more by major decision.
With the victory UVU now extends their best start in school-history to 8-2. Utah Valley also surpassed their former WWC best season tally as they won their second conference dual matchup on the season as UVU is in their third season of competition in the Western Wrestling Conference.
UVU will continue their road trip Saturday evening in Fargo, N.D. searching for their ninth and tenth consecutive wins. Utah Valley will first square off in non-conference fashion against the Dragons of Minnesota State-Moorhead at 5 p.m. The Wolverines will then conclude their road season by taking on conference foe North Dakota State at 6:30 p.m.
