UVU Drops Match to No. 12 Oregon, 3-0

Sept. 16, 2009

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University's Camie Manwill posted her sixth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs and Kayli Broadbent added 17 kills in an effort to upset No. 12 Oregon, but in the end the Ducks were too much in posting the 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 victory over the Wolverines Wednesday night.

In four matches against three ranked teams so far this season, the Wolverines are 1-3 with their lone win over a ranked opponent coming over Utah, 3-1, at the La Quinta Inn and Suites Invitational two weeks ago.

"It's been great that these kids have been able to give themselves opportunity after opportunity against these very good teams," UVU volleyball coach Sam Atoa said. "Oregon, USC and Utah have great programs and to see our new program compete with them makes me proud of what we're doing and where we're at."

An Oregon service error and back-to-back kills by Utah Valley gave the Wolverines an early 3-0 in the first set. The lead was short-lived, however, as the nationally ranked Ducks tied the score at 6-6 and then surged to a 10-6 advantage.

The Ducks (8-0) continued to build the lead to 17-12 before a UVU kill by Broadbent, a block by Sarah Clement and Chelsea Fa'alogo, an ace by Broadbent, a service error by Oregon and a kill by Manwill, knotted the score at 18-18.

The set was tied at 20-20 and Oregon responded with five straight points to win the opening set.

Broadbent and Manwill had four kills each in the set for the Wolverines (5-5).

Again, the Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set behind the serving of Manwill and they held the lead until the Ducks tied the score at 12-12. The set seesawed for the next few points and it was tied for the final time at 20-20. Broadbent had three consecutive kills to keep the match close at 24-23. Oregon's Emilee Sisco closed out the set with a kill.

Broadbent tallied nine kills in the set and Manwill had four while Fa'alogo had 15 assists.

Both teams took turns holding the lead in the third set. Again the set was tied at 20-20 and the Wolverines briefly at 21-20. The Ducks scored five of the next six points points to take the set and match.

"We can't ask for more than to give ourselves chances. We had opportunities and we haven't been able to convert. It will take some experience for us to do that," Atoa said.

Behind Broadbent and Manwill, Clement tallied five kills, while Faith Tusieseina added four and Dani Robison and Jaicee Kuresa added three each. Fa'alogo finished with 35 assists.

The Wolverines are back in action tonight when they visit Boise State (0-9) at 7 p.m. in Boise.
