OREM, Utah Valley University extended its winning streak to three matches Tuesday night with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Southern Utah in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
UVU's Camie Manwill posted her seventh double-double of the year with 10 kills and 16 digs, while Kayli Broadbent added 10 kills and freshman Erica Nish, in her first career start, tallied a career-high eight kills to lead the Wolverines.
"I thought that we did some good things. Southern Utah played hard and we expected that," UVU volleyball coach Sam Atoa said. "We executed well in some of the areas that we still need to improve in."
Broadbent tallied six kills and Manwill added three kills and seven digs in the 25-22 opening-set victory. The set was tied 1-1 before Utah Valley broke the set open to lead by five at 11-6 on a kill by Nish and an attack error by SUU.
The T-Birds (3-10) tied the set at 17-17 and 18-18, but the Wolverines scored six of the next seven points to take control of the set. UVU had two attack errors allowing SUU to close within two before a SUU service error led to the UVU victory.
Broadbent, Jaicee Kuresa and Manwill tallied four kills each in the 25-19 second-set victory and Nish added three.
UVU trailed 13-12 before a kill by Manwill and five straight service points by Allyce Jones built a five-point advantage. The T-Birds wouldn't get any closer than three points in UVU's 25-19 victory.
In the third and final set, the two teams were tied at 12-12. UVU scored six of the next eight points to forge out to an 18-14 lead. In the run, Kathleen Stevens and Chelsey Garfield had service aces and Sarah Clement had a kill.
After the T-Birds cut the lead to 18-16 Nish tallied back-to-back kills as UVU scored five straight points and seven of the last nine points to win the set and match, 25-18.
Jones finished with 16 digs and Chelsea Fa'alogo finished with 36 assists., while Lanni O'Reilly had two service aces.
UVU (8-5, 1-0) returns to Great West Conference action Thursday night when it hosts North Dakota Thursday Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. and South Dakota Friday Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Shurian Family Activity Center.
