HOUSTON - Senior Kayli Doxey had a match-high 14 kills to help propel Utah Valley's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep at Great West foe Houston Baptist on Saturday afternoon (25-23, 25-21, 25-23).
With the win the Wolverines improved to 13-9 and 4-2 in conference, while the Huskies dropped to 11-10 and 4-3.
"We were a little sluggish and had a hard time trying to get some momentum but we did some good things here and there that helped keep us in it," UVU head coach Sam Atoa said. "The girls stuck with it and they worked hard. Kayli did a nice job and had a great weekend where she was able to help secure these two victories for us."
In the first set, the hometown Huskies took their largest lead at 15-11 on a Courtney Whittleman service ace. UVU quickly battled back by scoring eight of the next 12 points to tie the score at 19-all. The Wolverines scored the next two points to take a 21-19 advantage and went on to win the set 25-23 on a kill from junior Jaicee Kuresa. Doxey led the Wolverines offensively in the set as she pounded six kills and hit .417.
UVU took a four point lead early in the second set as it led 10-6. HBU countered though by quickly tying the score at 11-11. From there the set went back-and-forth until the Wolverines worked ahead late in the set by scoring six of the final eight points to take the set 25-21. Senior Chelsey Heaps secured the set as she scored the final point with a kill.
In the third and final set, Houston Baptist held a late 23-18 advantage. The Wolverines then rallied by scoring the next seven points to sweep the match and win in three sets. During the final stretch, UVU freshman Brooklyn Campbell served the final six points and junior Sarah Clement scored the final point with a kill.
Behind Doxey's 14 kills, Heaps was next for UVU as she posted eight and Clement added seven. Campbell had another solid match as she finished tops in assists with 28, while senior libero Kathleen Stevens added a team-high 13 digs. Senior Dani Robison led UVU around the net with four blocks.
The win over HBU kept UVU's all-time record against the Huskies perfect, as the Wolverines are now 5-0 all-time against them. UVU and HBU will meet up again this season in Orem on Nov. 4.
The Wolverines will now come home to begin a six-match home stand Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against in-state rival Southern Utah. UVU will also host the Boise State Broncos Wednesday at 7 p.m. as well. Both matches will be televised live locally on UVU-TV (Comcast Ch. 17).
